Trailrunning in Großbritannien

You are bored of traditional residential running holidays, complete with boot camp style drills in a controlled environment? You want to explore some of Britain’s remotest islands and mountain peaks?  You are interested in learning practical sailing skills and experiencing life on a boat?

Our Devon based adventure trail running company Wild Running has teamed up with the owners of the Lady of Avenel, a 102 feet square rigged Brigantine tall ship, to offer the first sail-run trips in the UK.

SegelschiffLast autumn, I received an e-mail from Julie Shaughnessy, a former teacher now living on a Dutch barge on the Thames with her partner Stefan. The couple had bought the tall ship Lady of Avanel and repaired it to make it ship shape. As keen trail runners themselves, they wondered if Wild Running would be willing to run some trips to the Scottish Hebrides.

When I visited them in December, they made sure I drank a viking’s worth of wine, as it was Stefan’s birthday. A date was set for early June and a port decided upon: Oban harbor on the west coast of Scotland. During our first trip in June, runners, walkers and bikers will get the chance to explore the Hebridean Islands of Kerrera, Mull, Jura and Islay and a selection from Iona, Eigg, Muck and Rhum.

GipfelstürmerOur second trip in September will involve a “Three Peaks Challenge”, sailing between three national parks in England, Scotland and Wales and running up Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell. It is a „softer“ alternative to the Three Peaks Yacht race which was started in 1977 by sailor and adventurer Bill Tillman and has attracted many prestigious names from the world of sailing and fell running.

Trailrunners in den BergenThe sail-run adventure will be a once in a lifetime experience. We will run tricky mountain paths, visit old ruins and castles or cross ancient volcanic craters. After the running trips, we will enjoy our time at lovely anchorage places with great places to swim or paddleboard.

Furthermore, the voyages include voluntary crewing experience if you are keen to learn some new skills. The routes include some fascinating hazards such as the crossing of Caernarfon Bar, the treacherous Swellies in the Menai Straits, the rounding of the Mull of Kintyre, the whirlpools of the notorious Gulf of Corryvreckan, and finally the narrows at Corran, where the ebbing tide has been known to stop lesser boats dead in the water.

Non-running partners or those of you who would prefer to walk or cycle are welcome. Bikes and transport to the trails will be provided.
